GLORIOUS GATEFOLDS
The Cadillac of LP packaging was the gatefold. Sometimes, but not always, it meant there were two LPs in the set -- whether you got twice as much music or not, you could almost always count on twice as many diva photos! There were three types of gatefolds: first, the historic reissue or career retrospective, which typically compiled a retired diva's old treasured recordings and featured biographical information and many archival photos. Second, you have the academic recording, which involved rare material that needed extra real estate for all the research on the obscure composer or the long-lost arias. These can be fascinating and educational, but the diva was usually not the focus. The third type, and my favorite, is the diva devotional set -- a loving over-the-top presentation of the diva in all her many moods.
