HARK HARK THE LARK
Like a petite bird, Rita Streich warbled her way to fame and fortune, an ascendant world-class star pretty much from her debut performance as Zerbinetta in 1943. A student of Erna Berger (she sang the page to Berger's Gilda in Berlin), Streich was the "go-to" coloratura soubrette in the post-war era. She recorded prolifically during her 30-year career and some of her recitals discs were issued in several formats -- first by DGG, sometimes in two versions, one sung in original languages and then the same repertoire sung in German for the German market, as well as licensed releases on the US Decca label. For our purposes, that means lots of diva covers! Her beautiful bone structure almost always photographed well, and her small voice was highly "phonogenic."
